What to Know About Conscious Sedation

How does nitrous oxide sedation work?

Sedação Consciente
Sedation is achieved by inhaling a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide gases, which is quickly absorbed and equally eliminated. This combination causes a controlled depression of the CNS without compromising respiratory function.

Which Patients Can Undergo Sedation?

At Perrella Dental Clinic, we frequently receive inquiries about who is eligible for sedation. Almost universally, patients are suitable candidates for sedation. Generally, the presence of health issues may actually increase the advisability of sedation, as maintaining a lower stress level during procedures can significantly enhance their safety. Importantly, there are no constraints based on age or the specific dental procedure in question.

However, certain conditions necessitate caution. Sedation should be temporarily avoided by individuals with sinusitis, those who have had recent surgeries, or are suffering from acute respiratory diseases. Furthermore, it is not advisable for those under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, pregnant women in their first trimester, individuals who have had a heart attack within the past year, or those who have recently commenced therapy with drugs affecting mood, such as antidepressants, antiepileptics, hypnotics, or sedatives.

Moreover, sedation is categorically contraindicated for patients with psychotic disorders, pacemaker users, those with severely impaired nasal breathing, serious arrhythmias, or patients classified as ASA IV or higher.

During sedation, patients often report experiencing a sense of calm and relaxation, diminished pain perception, tingling sensations, and an altered sense of their body weight. They might also experience a distortion in time perception or feel slightly cold. These sensations are comparable to the initial stages of intoxication. Due to the relaxation induced, drowsiness is common. It is essential to understand that the procedure is conducted while the patient is fully conscious, retaining complete control over their body and mind, and able to interact normally with the dental team.

Key considerations include:

– The distinction between sedation and anesthesia is primarily the level of consciousness of the patient.

– Literature reviews reveal no fatalities associated with the technique when correctly applied.

– For uncooperative patients, combining different techniques may enhance the level of sedation.

– The potential for addiction to the gas exists; hence, it should never be used for recreational purposes.

– Continuous monitoring of the patient’s vital signs throughout the procedure is standard practice to ensure safety and to accurately gauge the sedation level.

– Legally, the handling of the mixing apparatus for sedation is restricted to professionally qualified dentists.

– It’s noteworthy that nitrous oxide not only facilitates sedation but also offers analgesic benefits and a mild amnestic effect.

– The administration of sedation does not eliminate the requirement for local anesthesia during dental interventions.

– One of the advantages of sedation is the ability for patients to recover swiftly and completely. Typically, within a mere 3 minutes post-procedure, patients are prepared to return to their daily activities, including driving, without the need for an escort.
